Like browsing before you buy a book? How about previewing a play before attending it? On Thursday Oct. 21 at 7 p.m. you'll get your chance: The Concord Players and the Concord Bookshop (65 Main Street) are teaming up to showcase a dramatic reading of Crossing Delancey at the Concord Bookshop during its evening hours.
Enter the set--an independent bookstore--where our lead Izzy lovingly labors by day (promoting handsome authors), then browse for your book club's next title! Tell your friends, young and old, to come and savor a snippet from this insightful comedy! The reading starts at 7:00, followed by a short Q&A and ticket raffle.
The play runs Nov. 5 through Nov. 20. Don't miss our opening night gala or the post-matinee director's talk-back. And do bring your grandmother, your teen, a friend. Discounts for groups of 10 or more are available.

DELANCEY OPENING NIGHT RECEPTION!
On Nov. 5, there will be a 7
p.m. reception, sponsored by Middlesex Savings Bank, for opening night
ticket holders of Crossing
Delancey, featuring appetizers, desserts and beverages that
reflect the themes of the play. (Curtain is at 8 p.m.) The rich cultural
and gastronomic history of the lower east side of New York City, the
setting of the play, will be presented in the style of the famed
delicatessen fare of New York: cured and smoked meats, fish, pickles,
bagels, cheese, pastries and sweets. The Players' opening night
receptions have been great reunions for both actors and audiences of
local theater communities. If you have opening night tickets, we hope
you will join us.
PLAYERS TAKE LEAD IN UPGRADING SOUND
The
Players have decided to take on the challenge of upgrading the 51
Walden arts center sound system. The enhancements are expected to occur
in three phases. First, the auditorium sound system will receive an
upgraded speaker system to support the needs of musical performances. This involves wireless microphones, special processing of the audio mix,
and a focused delivery of dialogue, music, and lyrics through a
custom-tuned, high-fidelity loudspeaker array. We will begin by
acquiring and installing a loudspeaker array and its support
electronics. The second phase will include improvements in equipment for
hearing-impaired audience members. The third phase will include
upgrades to the lighting control board and its associated
equipment. These planned technical improvements to enhance audience
enjoyment are an excellent opportunity for the community to offer
financial support to the arts in Concord.

The
2010-2011 Concord Players Yearbook will be available at the Fall Huddle
on Oct. 17. Those not picked up by members at that time will be mailed
to them.
A THEATRICAL WINE-TASTING PARTY
Come support Concord Youth Theatre! October 2 is right around the corner, and calendars are filling quickly. On that date, CYT will be holding a wine-tasting party (for patrons over 21 only!) Come taste wines from different countries that complement various shows (as in wines from Austria or Germany, depicting The Sound of Music or Cabaret! for example.) The event is 7-9 p.m., in West Concord, at the spacious LensProToGo,

CONCORD CELEBRATES 375TH BIRTHDAY
Rick Frese, Players board member and one of the organizers of the 375th Concord birthday celebration, had this to say about it: "It was an absolutely beautiful weekend for our 375th celebration. With 95 groups involved, the parade may have been the longest in Concord's history. The Saturday night Birthday Bash at the armory attracted 500 people. Sunday night's fireworks display, in the eyes of many viewers, was the most spectacular they had ever seen. The celebration was organized by a very dedicated, enthusiastic ten-member 375th Committee, led by Meg Gaudet, with scores of energetic volunteers. Stephanie Bowen, 25, was born at the time of the last celebration. We have now identified Concord's 375th baby, born 9/12/2010. What wonderful continuity!"
NEXT SEASON SHOW SELECTIONS
Rick
Frese reports that the Play Director/Selection Committee is
energetically preparing for the 2011-2012 season. The season will open
next fall with a terrific musical, followed by an appealing comedy and
closing with the tenth anniversary production of Little Women. The first round of
directors interviews will take place on October 24th and 25th. We
welcome member suggestions for a comedy or musical for next season. You

GEORGE FUNK
 George Funk, long-time member and volunteer extraordinary of The Concord Players, passed away Sept. 7, 2010. George and his wife Bette (who passed away in 1998) first came to The Players in 1975. Both worked on set construction, painting, graphics, front of house and as producers. They were involved with as many as 16 plays over the years.
During WWII, George was a U.S. Navy "SeaBee" (for CB, or Construction Battalion) in the Pacific area of operations. Professionally, after the war, George designed highways, bridges, tunnels, airports and buildings with various consulting firms. He was also a volunteer with the COA and Emerson Hospital, and served on several Town Committees.
Gifts in George's name may be made to Emerson Hospital, 133 ORNAC, Concord, MA 01742. A memorial service will be held Saturday, October 16, 2010, at 11:00 a.m. at the Trinitarian Congregational Church, 54 Walden Street, Concord.
PUBLICITY CHAIR RESIGNS FROM THE BOARD
It
is with sincere regret that the Board of Directors of The Players
announces that Marilyn Cugini, board member and chair of publicity, has
found it necessary to leave the board. Marilyn has found that her other
commitments, most notably her work with CCTV, take up too much of her
time to continue on the board. Marilyn has made substantial
contributions to expanding the audience for Players productions, and she
will be missed. The board wishes her well, and looks forward to future
contributions she will make to The Concord Players.

Come and eat, say hello to your friends, and meet some new ones, during the kick-off to our 2010-2011 season: Crossing Delancey, Breaking Legs, and Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (the musical). Directors Roxanne Myhrum, John Alzapiedi and Michael McGarty will share their visions of the shows they will be directing, and you will get a sneak peek at the fall play, Crossing Delancey. There's more: Claiborne Dawes has adapted a short story by Roald Dahl, The Landlady, which is directed by Lida McGirr. Come one, come all to our fall festival!
